Phare du Grand Jardin
St Malo, France
En route from Jersey to St Malo by boat, this lighthouse (Phare du Grand Jardin) is the majestic gatekeeper to the approaches of St Malo. The lighthouse marks the beginning of the channel entering the harbour of Saint-Malo. The original lighthouse was blown up during WWII by German troops. This replacement tower is very similar to the original, except it has a larger lantern. Built in the same style as the famous "Phare de la Jument" on Brittany's western tip. (The famous photograph of the lighthouse with a huge wave wrapping round it and the lighthouse-keeper in the doorway, yes he lived!)
